Today was the team meeting that we have scheduled every Wednesday. Before practice, Davis had me type up the itinerary for the meeting. He discussed with us who he thought was ready t compete and why. He then began to tell us that one of our athletes is probably the best sprinter on the guys side but he doesn't believe that he can. he wanted Camille to chat with him and to encourage him in hopes that he gets his mind right before the meet this weekend. He just wanted me to have a general (personal meeting with the girls) to encourage them and uplift them. This would take place after the group meeting. Davis said that most of the guys are okay and that they are fine with the overall meeting. I would say that most of the girls were receptive and understood the goal of the team and that is to win the conference championship meet. I just gave an overall encouraging speech and for them to help and encourage one another when they can and to not be so selfish. After the meeting, I sat down wit Davis as he wanted me to assist him with the final entries for the meet this weekend. Overall, I would say that today was a pretty insightful day. I was not sure how the groups would respond to me, being that I mainly had contact with group 3 girls and group 2 girls occasionally, but I think that it went fairly well.
Today was a moderate day fr them team. This week, they have a meet in Kentucky and we are just prepping them for it. Today I was given group 3 and they had 3,broken 500's. They had a 300 and a 200 with 60 seconds rest in between the two. It was tough for them but they all hit their times today. Afterwards, I cooled them down and Davis asked me to have a brief meeting with them. I instructed them that this was a meet for them to put a good time down. Basically I was telling them to take it serious this week. They need a good time to get into a good heat for this championship meet in 2 weeks. They seem like they were taking heed to what I was saying which is a good thing. So overall, i would say that it was as a successful practice.
Being that coach was not able to coach and give advice at the meet, he had a lot to say about it today. Before practice even started, he held a brief meeting with the team and explained what we need to work on (as he would call it, the good the bad and the ugly). So practice started off okay. I led them in the drills and the stretches for the evening. After that they broke off into groups. Davis then told me to tell them that if they don't make the target time, then they have another rep. He stated that he is tired of them thinking that it is okay for them to not hit their goals. So I relayed the message to them as if I had said it. I had group 2 (boys and girls) today and they hit all of their times (5 200's with decreasing rest) for all the reps except for the last rep (the girls). Davis told me to shut them down as I was going to give them another one but overall, they had a pretty good workout today.
Today was a pretty long day. It was meet day. First I helped Davis set up his equipment (his camera, desk area, printer and things of that nature). When I was done aiding him, Camille and I led the pre-meet routine for the team. Davis printed out a chain of exercises and stretches that each athlete will do prior to the start of the meet. It took about 15 minutes for them to complete. It is basically a shake out and getting your muscles going. After that we waited for the met to start. Once everything was put together, the meet had begun. The meet started off with the 4x800 meter relay. We did not have anyone in this event as one of our athletes got hurt and was not able to run the event. The first event that my sprinters took apart of was the 4x100 meter relay. The girls did not do so bad. They got 2nd overall. Their time was not as fast as I ( or Davis) would have liked it to be but it was acceptable. After the race was over, I went to the girls and asked them how each of them felt and what they felt that they could have done better. Then I instructed them to cool down. The next event was the 400 meter dash. I encouraged each athlete to warm up as their race time became closer. The girls and the boys both did an okay job. The guys ran respectable times overall but the some of the girls did and some of them did not. Davis told me to go talk to the girl that did not do so well. He said that I had to approach her differently because of the type of athlete/person that she is. I just asked her how she felt. She elaborated on her race and I told her what I thought she could have done differently. Being that she just came off an injury, I think she was playing it safe and not going all out. She felt bad but I just told her not to worry about this race (leave it behind you) and to just focus on her next race. The next event was the 200. We had a couple of guys and girls in this race. Overall they ran decent. I got ice and I stretched a couple of athletes out afterwards as they needed it. After that, we had the relays (the 4x400), my favorite race. They did not do too bad. We had 2 relays, and A team and a B team. Our B team beat our A team and they took the meet overall (the won). Even though the times were not the best, we know who will run on the official relay based on the times that they put down this weekend. Overall, it was a good meet and a good day even though it was cold. Today was pre-meet. Being that they have ea meet tomorrow, today was alight and easy day. Today I was over group 3 again. They had 3 200's at a certain pace and after that tey had 1 100 really fast. After that I sat down with Camille, UIndy's graduate assistant, and we discussed the itinerary for the next day (the track meet). We sat down and spoke about which events each athlete was running and how we were going to be in certain places during certain events. Also the good thing about this meet is that I will get the opportunity to help assist and coach at the meet at the same time because Davis is meet management (meaning that he is running the meet as well). So the coaching will be left up to me and Camille and I will assist him with setting up different things and posting results and things of that nature. After practice, coach told me and Camille that he is heavily relying on us to step up and take charge because he will be busy with running the meet. Overall, today was a good and light day. Today was a light day for the team as we had a team meeting. Before hand, I typed up some points that Davis wanted me to type up and sat them at the table near the door. The other Graduate Assistant, Camille, instructed everyone to take a paper before sitting down. In the meeting, Davis went over the points from the itinerary. Afterwards, he took questions and concerns. Overall, he gave them a speech about being prepared for the outdoor season and them being able to compete in any weather no matter the circumstances. Afterwards, I told the ones that are hurt to ice and do a couple of laps and relax on their day off. Davis, then called me and Camille into his office to discuss the training for the groups next week and how we needed to encourage them (especially the girls) because they are a young group and they need it.
Today I was given group 3 again. It was a pretty tough workout for them. They had 3 broken 'up 600's. They had to run 200 meters within a certain time and rest for 1 minute and then run the 400 in a certain time frame. They first one was cool. They all hit their goal times. One the 2nd one, they pushed through again. On the last one 1 girl could not finish, so I told her that she didn't have to finish the rep. Davis told me at the beginning of the workout that he needs quality and that if they are not making time and hitting there marks then it does not count toward the rep and they will have another one. I could tell that she was giving her all and that she was just tired and was in discomfort. So I told her to shut it down. She did the cool down instead and went and iced her leg. The rest of the group was fine. they completed the workout with no problem and did the cool down schedule as well. Afterwards I had a slight meeting with them telling them what they can do better and what t hey can work on. Overall, today was a good day. Today was a relaxed day. I spent most of the morning working on my project that I got from Davis. It is actually not too hard it is just a bit tedious, but I appreciate the experience.
Today was a pretty smooth day. I had group 3 again and today they had 300's with 4 minutes rest. For the most part they did a pretty good job. They made the time that was expected for them for mostly all of the reps. Afterwards, I transferred all the times into Davis's book and then he called me over to look at the short sprinters. They were working on starts and he wanted me to critique what I saw that they were doing right and wrong. After that the groups cooled down and practice was over. it was not too bad being that they are getting ready for their meet next week. Overall, they had a good week.
Today I was given group 3 again. As a team, we all go through the warm up together, then we typically branch off into our different groups. So group 3 had hills today so I had to drive a couple of athletes to the hill and the other athletes drove in their car. It was about 10 of us. Before that, we all warmed up at the University's stadium and then mt group headed toward the hill. Being that it was about 9 girls, it was easy for me to break them up into groups of 3. I put the groups together according to their talent. I did not put all the fast people together all the mediocre and all the slower people together. I broke each group down so the group would be even. This is just so each athlete can push each other. Giles always say that one turtle can push another turtle so therefore I broke the groups down. They each had 10 x 100 meter hills. It wasn't a bad workout for them. After the 8th one, I could tell that one of my girls was giving all that she had so I sat her out for the last two. i just feel as though if they are not efficient, then you are wasting your time so I jut sat her out the last two. Afterwards, we drove back to the stadium and I instructed them to cool down. Some of the athlete are not good about cooling down so I had to remind them. Overall, today was a pretty decent day for the greyhounds.
