Today was the weekly team meeting. Being that I typed the notes up last night, I had them ready to be passed out today. Each of us (Camille. coach and I) spoke about our expectations and what we want each of them to accomplish this weekend. Then we opened the floor for each of them to say how they felt and what they think that they should be running this weekend. Coach then drew up some numbers on the board to show how each of them can accomplish their goals by following certain plans and regimes. He talked about dieting and taking off when necessary. After the meeting, I talked with one of the hurdlers about their mental attitude and how they need to think more positive thoughts and how they will run just fine. After that, I left and came home.
Today was exciting, I was given the hurdlers to day. They warmed up with the team and then they were shipped off to me. They had 3 starts over one hurdle and then they had a 2 400 meter runs and then 1 200 after that. I gave feedback as to what they could work on and to attack each hurdle as if they are in a race. They were mainly working in their starts of the race and then they were working on finishing their races. Overall, they did an awesome job. Coaching hurdles are actually my favorite. I ran them in high school but never in college. I never coached them until my mentor-ship and I love it. Who would have ever thought. It is a great race to watch and run. Davis then wanted me to type up the meeting notes for tomorrow. He just wants to get the message to them that they need to put down a good time this weekend. I typed up the notes and then we chatted for a bit about the meet this weekend. He spoke about who he think is ready to compete and those he think will fall flat. After we chatted, I left and went home. Today was a pretty good session. Today was a pretty day. Even though it is my last week, I think I will hang around until the season ends. Davis gave Camille and I the group and let us run the workout. We took them over the warm up series and drills and then we broke them up into their groups. I took group one today and Camille took the rest of the team. Today they had stick drills. Stick drills are when they run over banana hurdles as fast and efficient as they can for about 50 meters and then run the rest of the 50 meter straight. Davis was overseeing what we were doing. He sat back and watched and stepped in a little bit if he felt like he needed to. He was mainly encouraging the groups. the my groups had 200 meter repeats. They only had 3 of them. Overall they did a pretty good job today.
Afterwards, Davis went over what he wanted each athlete to run this coming weekend. They only have 2 more weeks until the conference meet so he wants them to put up some good times so that they get into good heats for the meet. We discussed who should run what and we did the data entries for the team. Today was a good day. Today was a decent day. No, my team did not win the meet but we did put down some qualifying marks for nationals this weekend. On the men's side, we had one guy to qualify for nationals in the 200 meter dash and the guys 4x400 meter dash also are ranked in the Nation as well. During the meet, I was coaching, encouraging and uplifting the team. I felt like it made a difference in their performances. The guys really amazed me because they stepped up and they took control as they won the last event of the evening, the 4x400 meter relay. They ran an impressive time and they edged Indiana Tech in the end. Before the girls ran their relay, Davis asked me and Camille to go over and talk to the girls and make sure that they were prepared to run. They ended up getting second in their race but they ran a season best in the 4x100 meter relay. Overall. I would say that today was a pretty successful day and I think Davis was proud with how Camille and I ran the team that day. Today was a pretty long day. It was the first day of the Little State Championships. This meet is held at Indiana Wesleyan University. Today was pre-lims and tomorrow is finals. As soon as we got there, Coach instructed the team to do a shake out (pre-meet). Camille and I took the team through the stretches and drills which typically last about 10-15 minutes. After that we got ready for the races. Coach told us to give them the speech of them just making the finals. We had athletes in the 100, 200, 400 and the 400 meter hurdles. Athletes (boys and girls) all made it to the finals in these events. They did just enough to make it so Coach was satisfied overall with them as a team going into day 2. I had group 3 today and they had 350's with a certain 5 minutes rest and after that they had 2 150's. Today was pretty tough for them. I had to measure off marks on where they should be at during certain times. The girls ran the times for the first 2 350s but were struggling for the last one. Afterwards I gave them 12 minutes rest and made them do only 1 150, but I told them that they had t make time and they did. After that Davuis pulled me aside and I helped him coach the hurdlers. They were doing starts over the first 3 hurdle 9 (the 400 meter hurdlers). After that they had some runs afterwards. He let me analyze their starts for them and tell them what they did wrong and what they can improve upon. Afterwards the team cooled down and Camille and I let them through the static stretches. . Today was a pretty cool day. Davis instructed Camille and I to be over group one today. They had block starts, assisted runs and a couple sprints. After I finished with them, We watched them do starts and told them what they needed to work on. We were primarily working on technique stuff today. It was a technique day for group one. Overall,, practice went well today. Afterwards, he called Camille and I into his office and asked our opinion of who should he run in certain events because entries were due today. We gave our opinions based on their performance this weekend. He then let me do the meet entries for the sprinters. After that, we chatted about the attitude of the team today and from this past weekend and then I went home. Today was meet day. We had a meet in Louisville, Kentucky at Bellarmine University. It was about a 2 hour and a half drive on Interstate 65. I drove myself and Camille rode with me. The meet started at 11 o'clock. The first race that my guys were running started at 12:05pm. We got to the meet around 10 o'clock which gave my group time to pre-meet. Pre-meet consists of a shake out straight of the bus to get your muscles up and going. After they did that (about 10 minutes), the team found them a spot to camp out at. The first race was the girls 4x100 meter relay. S o they began warming up around 11 0'clock. Davis instructed me to have them do a couple of handoffs before the race. At 12:05 the race started, first the girls then the boys. Uindy girls did an okay job. They had a couple of bad exchanges but overall, they did well, they won the event. The time was pretty decent as well. It was a lot faster than last weeks time. Our boys did not run a 4x1 relay as one of their legs go hurt. The next event was the 400 meter dash. They girls did okay. One of our girls won the overall meet but it wasn't a national qualifying time. She only ran a 58.1. They guys went 1 and 2 in the event but the time was not exciting. It was far from their PR. I took the initiative to ask a couple of the runner how they were feeling about their races. Overall the feedback was neutral. They all complained about the wind and how it affected them. Coach then had me stretch out a couple of girls because they felt aches and pains in their legs. The next event was the 400 hurdles. Coached asked me to prep the guys and the girls for their races to clear their head. Our girls ended up going 1, 2, and 3 in the hurdle race. The time was not that bad either. So I would say that it was a successful race and time for them all. After the 400 hurdles was he 200 meter dash. We had about 4 girls and 3 guys in this event. Coach gave them a speech and he told them to do what they got to do. They did an okay job overall in this event, on the girls and the guys side. The last event which is my favorite event was the 4x400 meter relay. Our boys did not run this event as one of them were hurt. Our girls on the other had a A team and a B team. Both of the relays did not do so well. They were behind most of the race and it was downhill from that point. I think most of it came from the fact that all of them were tired and just did not have enough energy for the races. I cheered and encouraged the teams anyway. Overall , I would say that it was an okay day. The weather was not the best but they did the best that they could despite the conditions, Today was a pretty short day as they have a meet tomorrow. Their workout consisted of starts and shakes outs. I worked with group 1 (short sprinters) to help and aid them with their block starts. I went over their warm up and stretches with them. Camille ran through the drills with them and then we all broke up into our separate groups. Coach oversaw me coaching them through their starts. He gave me tips, pointers and things to look for in each of their starts. He gave me feedback to give to them as well. They each had about 4 starts a piece. After their starts, they had 2 150's at a moderate pace. After they did that we went through their cool down and that concluded pre-meet day.
Practice was fairly moderate today. Being that they run this weekend, coach didn't want to run them into the ground (as he would say). The group that I had was group 3 (as always). All that they had today 200 meter repeats. My group hit all of their times today and I was proud of them. They did really well. Usually someone slacks off toward the end but they finished all of them today. Afterwards, I ran through the cool down with them. Coach met with me and Camille afterwards and spoke about the team and asked us how everything went with practice and the attitude of the athletes today. I helped pick up the hurdles and the cones and out them away.
