Today the team did not have practice. They just had a team meeting. Before the meeting, Davis asked me to type up an itinerary for the meeting. It consisted of the meet schedule for the outdoor season and he also asked me to pass out goal sheets to each and every athlete. At the meeting he gave an overview of the indoor season and how they were going to be a lot better outdoors. He gave his speech about how each athlete brings something different to the team but they still have to work together and have the same goal. After his speech, he had me pass out the goal sheets and told each of them to write down there goals and what they wish to accomplish for the outdoor season. Once they completed that form and turned it in, the meeting was over. Me, Davis and another one of his graduate assistants went into the office and got things ready for the next day.
Today was a pretty good day. I was given group 3 again. Being that the had a tough workout yesterday, today was a moderate day. they had fartlek runs ( 2x15 ). Fartlek runs consists of running a certain amount of meters and walking a certain amount. For instance, you can run 200 meters and walk 100 meters as rest. This will continued on for 1 minutes for my group today. After I ran that group, Davis brought me over again to go over some jumping techniques and why he was having them do it again today after their workout. The jumpers worked out with group 1 ( short sprinters, 100/200 ) and afterwards they had a jumps workout. He told me that they were doing bounds as an explosive technique. Overall, today was a pretty cool day. Today was a tough day for the greyhounds track and field team. Being that only a select few number of athletes came to practice during spring break, coach was not giving them any slack. I was given group 3, which consists of long sprinters (400/800). They had 6 600's with a certain time that needed to be hit by the time they reached the 400 meter mark. Coach explained to me that this workout mostly focuses on them finishing their races. He said that for 2/3 of their races, they look good, but the last part of their races, they seems to struggle. So I was instructed to focus on them hitting their 400 meter time and them finishing the last part of their reps. After their 4th one, Davis told me to shut them down, as he could see that they were exhausted. So they only did 4 of them. Afterwards I instructed them to cool down. When their workout was over, Davis called me over to explained the jumpers workout, They were doing approaches, Approaches are what they do before they jump ( either long jump or high jump ). He explained to me why he was doing this for certain jumpers and what each one needed to focus on. Overall, today was an eventful one.
Today I spent a lot of time working on the project that was assigned to me from Davis. He wants me to put together the facility record for University of Indianapolis ARC. He wants me to gather all the best times in each event from 2012. I have spent hours going back and researching from a site called TFRRS.com to get all the times from each meet, event race and time. I created an excel spreadsheet and I have about 1/4 of it completed thus far.
Friday was a pretty intense day as the group had 200 meter repeats. As I stated in my previous post, being that it is Spring Break, there are only a few umber of athletes at practice. Today it was about 3 girls and 2 boys. They each had 6 (200's) of them with decreasing rest. So it was pretty tough for them. I set up cones where they each would start and I also blew the whistle every 10 seconds so they would each know their times and where they should be at for each rep. Overall, they did a decent job about the 4 rep it got tough for them all but I am proud to say that they were all pushing through. Today was a moderate day. The group had hills today. We first did the warm up and strecthing at the school and drove to the hill afterwards. The 3 guys had to run for 45 seconds and the women had to run 35 seconds. i timed the girls and coached timed the boys. The 2 guys that were at practice made all of their times. The girls made all of their times as well until the last 2 reps. But overall they gave a pretty good effort. We all had to car pool and drive to the location (the hill), so I drove them there and drove all of them back to the school. Today was a pretty good day.
Today was pretty easy going. Being that it is Spring Break and very few athletes attending practice, Davis ran the workout and he went over the project that we wanted me to complete. In 2012, the ARC ( which is considered to be the Athletic Recreation Center ) was built. Since then Uindy has held several track and field meets throughout the indoor season at UIndy. While these meets were taking place, records were not being kept. Davis informed me that he wanted me to look back, from 2012 til now and get the facility records for each event. So I started on that.
Today was not a bad day. Being that a couple of athletes just came from Nationals and it is Spring Break, today was a pretty decent day. There was a total of only 6 athletes at practice today. So the group was pretty small. The group worked on mechanics and technique for the most part. I observed as Davis coached the athletes that were doing block starts. He asked me to observe and to point out what I thought was happening. I pointed out what I thought was happening with their starts and he said that I was correct. one athlete was not driving long enough and the other one was doing a pretty good job. They had weights afterwards and I stayed with them to show them what Davis had wanted them to do.
This weekend was Division II Track and Field Nationals. They were held in Missouri this weekend. Even though I was not physically there, I was instructed my my mentor to watch the event live and write down my thoughts about our athletes races. We had a guy in the 200 meter dash (Quintyn Quales) and we also had the guys 4x400 meter relay. I wrote down what I thought that Quales could work on and what I thought he did good. The only critique that I had for him was that his block start was a little rough. In my opinion I think he could have drive a little longer but other than that, I think he ran well. He clocked in at 21,8 which is good for him considering that he in only a sophomore and it was a PR (personal record) for him. The relay did a fantastic job even though they got 4th overall, which is pretty goof because three of the legs are freshmen. So I think that is great for them as a team. Today was a pretty cool day. Davis left for Nationals and he left the rest of the team with me. He gave me a list of instructions on how to run the groups. Being that he allowed me to led the workout by myself. All of the groups ran the same thing. So the did their warn up regimen and stretched. I set up cones for them to start and finish. They each had three 350's at the a certain pace. The girls had one goal to hit and the guys had another goal to hit. The first group made time. The second group of girls made their times and the third group were a little under but they completed it. The guys all ht their times. Some guys were a little faster but they made it through the workout. After the workout, I took them through the hurdle mobility routine that Davis left for them to do. They cooled down, we had a brief meeting/gathering and they left. i would say that we had a pretty decent workout today. I (emailed) forwarded all the times to Davis. I emailed him who showed up and what each athlete ran. I am still waiting on a reply from him. I know that he is busy with the guys at Nationals but I am certain he will get back to me before their races start this weekend. Overall, I would say that practice was a success.
